Edmund Kennedy (1818-1848)

Kennedy was born on Guernsey, in the Channel Islands. He arrived in Sydney in 1840 where he joined the Surveyor-General's Department as an assistant to Sir Thomas Mitchell. Kennedy made numerous expeditions into unexplored areas of Queensland opening up many new areas until he tragically met his death at the hands of hostile natives while trying to open up a route to the tip of the Cape York Peninsula in 1848.

Bordered by the Gulf of Carpentaria to the west and the Coral Sea to the east, Cape York Peninsula is dominated by mighty meandering rivers and vast flood plains.

It's the place where you can stand right on the very tip of the Australian continent, discover the oldest rainforest in the world - the Daintree, and travel deep into wild frontier country. The 4WD journey to 'the tip' is indeed still the adventure of a lifetime.

The splendid region of Outback Queensland is rich in traditional and contemporary Australian heritage, fossilised history, pioneering spirit and colourful characters. It's the birthplace of QANTAS, and where the legend of our stockman started. New for 2012, we also have a tour that follows Ludwig Leichhardt's expedition through the outback and across the Gulf.

The East Coast of QLD is a complete contrast to the Outback, with hundreds of idyllic islands and unique natural attractions. Here we find the world's largest reef system, the Great Barrier Reef, and also the largest sand island in the world - Fraser. Further north in the magnificent Whitsundays is Hayman Island, an Australian tourism icon.
