Central Australia & The Corner Country

Outback Spirit Tours

In the early 1860's two expedition teams set out to cross the Australian Continent from South to North.

In 1860 Burke and Wills departed Melbourne to explore the unmapped and unknown interior, arriving on the shores of the Gulf of Carpentaria in 1861. In that same year, John McDouall Stuart set off from Adelaide to cross the continent, arriving at the northern coastline east of Darwin in 1862.

The story of these brave explorers is fascinating. It's even more so when you can follow in their footsteps and imagine what it would have been like all those years ago. We'll follow parts of their legendary expeditions, but we'll also divert off the explorer trail to show you highlights, some of which you may not have even heard of. For example the Lost City near Cape Crawford, where you'll take an incredible half day tour into this hidden treasure by helicopter.

Join us on either of these tours and you'll discover the captivating history of these early explorers. Not only that, you'll do some exploring yourself - through some of the most remote yet fascinating country in the outback.

Robert O'Hara Burke (1821-1861)

Together with William John Wills they were the first men to cross Australia from south to north. Their expedition was one of the best equipped with enough food to last for 2 years, 28 horses, 24 camels, and wagons carrying all sorts of provisions including beads as gifts for the aborigines. Although a number of the party survived, Burke and Wills died of starvation in tragic circumstances on the banks of Coopers Creek.
