Central Australia & The Corner Country
Outback Spirit Tours
The Red Centre has been described as the heart and soul of Australia. The best way to explore these natural wonders is on a professionally escorted Outback Spirit Tour.
In the early 1860's two expedition teams set out to cross the Australian Continent from South to North. In 1860 Burke and Wills departed Melbourne to explore the unmapped and unknown interior, arriving on the shores of the Gulf of Carpentaria in 1861. In that same year, John McDouall Stuart set off from Adelaide to cross the continent, arriving at the northern coastline east of Darwin in 1862.
The story of these brave explorers is fascinating. It's even more so when you can follow in their footsteps and imagine what it would have been like all those years ago. With these 2 trips, that's exactly what you can do. We'll follow parts of their legendary expeditions, but we'll also divert off the explorer trail to show you some of the highlights, some of which you may not have even heard of. For example the Lost City near Cape Crawford, where you'll take an incredible half day tour into this hidden treasure by helicopter.
Of course we'll also take you to some of the more well known wonders of the interior. The Red Centre, at the very heart of Australia is home to one of the great natural wonders of the world, Uluru. Around the corner, the Olgas are also a spectacular sight that can be seen time and time again.
If you're following Burke and Wills through the Corner Country, you'll visit Cameron Corner - the point where New South Wales meets with Queensland and South Australia. Further up the track at Innamincka, you can stand next to the exact tree where Burke and Wills returned to after reaching the Gulf. After departing the camp over 4 months earlier they had arrived back one day after the depot party had left. 'Dig' was blazed into the tree, as the party had buried supplies in case Burke and Wills managed to return. It's now known as the Burke and Wills 'Dig Tree'.
These regions also have a huge cultural significance, with the Aboriginal presence and their spiritual connection echoed in every corner. On a tour with Outback Spirit, you'll discover not only the history of our early explorers, but also the rich culture of the Aboriginal people who have occupied these regions for thousands of years.
Whether you want to experience the wonders of a Central Australia or the rugged beauty of Corner Country, an Outback Spirit guided tour will reveal the real Australian Outback.
