Bass arrived from England in1795 and together with Matthew Flinders, set off to circumnavigate Tasmania, then known as Van Diemen’s Land. They mapped the north coast, explored the Tamar River and Derwent River (to where Hobart now stands) and returned to Sydney having established that Tasmania is indeed an island.
