Menindee Lakes - Pooncarie - Mungo National Park
This morning we take some time to explore Broken Hill. We begin with a visit to Silverton, home to the movie set which has appeared in several films including Mad Max, A Town Called Alice and Mission Impossible II. We then return to the city to visit the Albert Kersten Mining and Minerals Museum, which gives us an insight into all aspects of Broken Hill's unique geology. After some morning tea we depart Broken Hill for Menindee, a town of 1,000 people on the banks of the Darling River and home to the 'Menindee Lakes'. The town has ties to several Australian Explorers. Enjoy a visit to the historic Maiden's Menindee Hotel.
After lunch we continue our journey to Mungo National Park which was World Heritage Listed in 1981 in recognition of its rich Aboriginal heritage. The area maintains a continuous record of human occupation stretching back well over 40,000 years. Rain and wind has uncovered ancient fireplaces and hearths, as well as calcified plant matter, artefacts, stone tools and animal bones. Late this afternoon we arrive at the recently built Mungo Lodge. Enjoy dinner in the Mungo bar and restaurant. (B, L, D)
