To describe the Kimberley as remote and rugged is an understatement. With fiery red landscapes, ancient rock formations, verdant native flora and fauna and never-ending horizons, the Kimberley is Australia’s final frontier.

Located in the north of Western Australia, the region spans over 420,000 square kilometres, is three times the size of England and is 100% uniquely Australian. For some, travelling deep into Kimberley’s wildland may seem challenging, but for Outback Spirit, nothing is impossible. We’ve been sharing the Kimberley with our guests for over 20 years, allowing them to experience the Kimberley the way we do. Here are the favourite places we visit on an Outback Spirit Kimberley adventure.

WORDS Ella Chronowski

1. SANDSTONE DOMES OF THE BUNGLE BUNGLES

The World Heritage-listed Bungle Bungle Range is one of the most iconic natural landmarks in the Kimberley. These unique sandstone formations in the Purnululu National Park stand over 300 metres tall and have been carved out of the earth over millions of years, leaving behind an intricate network of beehive-shaped domes.

2. NATURAL PHENOMENON OF HORIZONTAL FALLS

Sir David Attenborough calls them “one of the greatest natural wonders of the world”, and at Horizontal Falls, Mother Nature is truly on display. Located in Talbot Bay in the Buccaneer Archipelago, Horizontal Falls is only accessible by seaplane. Swirling tidal currents pass through narrow gorges in the McLarty Range, resulting in a horizontal waterfall effect that you have to see to believe.

3. THE MESMERISING LAYERS OF PUNAMII-UUNPUU, MITCHELL FALLS

Known as Punamii-Uunpuu to the Wunambal Gaambera people, the Mitchell Falls is a series of four stunning waterfalls that cascade down the Mitchell Plateau and embody the beauty and rugged character of the Kimberley. Deep in the Mitchell Plateau and challenging to get to, Mitchell Falls is home to diverse wildlife and refreshing natural pools that tumble into each other. While you can walk and swim in the falls, the best way to experience them is to take to the skies on a scenic flight that gives you a whole new perspective.

4. UNTAMED EL QUESTRO

El Questro National Park is a sprawling wilderness covering over 700,000 acres in East Kimberley. Loved by adventure seekers and nature lovers, El Questro is home to diverse ecosystems, including rugged gorges, freshwater rivers, and breathtaking panoramas. Visitors can explore the park on foot or by 4WD to uncover its many natural wonders, such as the towering El Questro Gorge, the thermal Zebedee Springs, and the picturesque Chamberlain Gorge.

5. THE LEGENDARY GIBB RIVER ROAD

The Gibb River Road is a 660-kilometre 4WD track from the Dampier Peninsula all the way up to the Ord River in Kununurra in the far Northwest of Australia. This epic driving route is one of Australia’s most unique 4WD tracks, as it winds its way through the Kimberley, passing natural wonder after natural wonder. If you’re seeking an Australian Outback adventure, this is it. See spectacular landscapes of intensely coloured ranges, dramatic gorges, significant cultural sites, waterfalls, rock pools and boab trees.
